Steam Split Home Opening Weekend
Andrew Kurlandski had 3 goals and an assist and Stewart Scott made 36 saves as the St. Louis Jr. Blues defeated the Queen City Steam 6-3 in the second game of the Steams home opening weekend.
Christopher Hutton chipped in with 3 assists for St. Louis during the afternoon contest at Sports Plus Arena.
Queen City struck first with a Patrick Nelson powerplay goal at 7:45 of the opening frame. The Jr. Blues were able to even things up in the 2nd as Kurlandski netted a powerplay marker 1.09 into the 2nd period.
The Steam were back on top after Patrick Higgins and James Giles scored 60 seconds apart in the opening minutes of the 3rd period. Things turned ugly after St. Louis' John Scheiter earned a double minor and a game ejection for checking from behind at 5:51 of the 3rd. The Jr. Blues answered with three straight short handed markers - two by Kurlandski (10:40 / 13:09) and one from tyler Pollzzi (14:19).
With a little less than 2:30 to go in the game, Ryan Gagllardi was given 5 minutes and a game ejection for a Board Checking major. During that same action, one of the Jr Blues assistant coaches was issued 2 minutes for Abuse of Officials and a Game Ejection for obscene language. Philip Blackwood tossed in an empty net goal with 10 seconds left, at which point St. Louis' head coach Jack Behan was given a game ejection for Leaving the Bench.
The Steam hit the road for next 4 weekends, with their next series against the Motor City Chiefs on September 15th and 16th.
